Strike!

As there is only 5 Christmas exams for TY's, Ms. L decided to have a party and bring us bowling for our last day because were such good girls! ;)

This morning all TY's went to the library for our Christmas party hosted by Class Cairdeas. There were all sorts of cakes and goodies to eat! Towards the end of the party we all put our Kris Kindle presents into a Santa sack. Then Aisling, dressed as Santa distributed all of the presents. There were smiles all round! We also all joined in on the Cha-cha slide and Gangnam Style!

After, we headed straight to Kbowl in Newbridge. It took a while to organize all of the teams and lanes but eventually we were all set! Afterwards we were aloud to go to WhiteWater in Newbridge to do some shopping or just eat! haha

Today was a great  to finish off our first term in TY. It was nice to have a little treat after our Christmas tests. I think everyone is really excited for Christmas now, and I hope everyone has a brilliant Christmas! Talk soon :)

The little Nutcracker ballet

Just before our Christmas tests Ms. l decided to bring us to see the Nutcracker ballet. Here is the opening performance of the ballet.

Christmas Carol Service

Today we had our annual carol serve to mark the end of our first term of this school year. It  is a tradition in St. Wolstan's for the entire school to gather in the hall and listen to Christmas choirs played by both the orchestra and trad group and also listen to some of the Christmas classics snug by the choir. A student from each year also read a small extract. The music department and Mr. K went to great trouble in order to make the choir service a success, and indeed it was!

During the Choir service our former Year Head Ms. H, gave out certificates to some of the students from TY and Fifth year (last years third years) for receiving excellent results in their Junior Cert. I was delighted to receive my cert! Afterwards we stayed back and got our photo taken by the Liffey Champion. Well done everybody :)

Check out the latest event taking place at St. Wolstan's here.

St. Vincent de Paul Collection

As part of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at school, we were asked to participate in the annual SVP Christmas collection. We were organised into groups of  three or four students per each 2 hour shift. Last Saturday morning Kate, Fiona and I collected money from busy Christmas shoppers at the doors of Tesco in Celbridge. I must be said that most people were very generous and willing to reach out and help some of the less fortunate people in their local community. Over the past few weeks we have also been encouraging students to bring in small gifts for the annual SVP Christmas appeal. We were delighted that so many people brought in gifts for the appeal and we know that they are going to a great cause.

If you want to become part of the action and get invloved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society make sure you check out their website here.

Geography Kenyan Presentation

As part of Transition Year geography, we were divided up into groups of 2 and given a country of interest. Each group had to research the requirements needed to travel to their chosen country, the food eaten, the cultural norms, and some of the most popular places to visit in the country. We also had to research how to get there, and at what price. We then presented our research in a power-point presentation and tried to sell our chosen country to our fellow class mates.

For our project we contacted the Kenyan embassy in Ireland and asked them could they provide us with any information on Kenya. Luckily they sent us loads of info and even sent us a DVD showing us the wildlife found in Kenya. I thought this project really enjoyable and I now really want to visit Kenya in the future.

Keep calm it's nearly Christmas!

The school is beginning to look very festive at the moment with Christmas decorations in nearly every class room! All TY's are beginning to get very excited including class Síochain! We like having Christmas sing songs in free classes and whatnot! ;)

Last week we also did our draw for our class Kris Kindle. Our presents will be distributed on the last day of school before the Christmas break when the TY's have their Christmas party. Some people are finding it hard to keep it a secret, including myself!

Adios Junk Kouture

Well, we have finally reached the end of our Junk Kouture project. We first starred the project at the beginning of September and we have been working on them for 3 double classes every week ever since. A lot of effort has gone into creating our outfits but I think the work has definaly paid off! Although there were a few disagreements a long the way, I feel I have learned a great deal about working with other people in a small group. I also learned a lot of new sowing skills and techniques!

A fashion Show was held at school yesterday to show case all of the unique dresses made out of recyclable materials. Each group had to pick a song which was suitable to the theme of the dress and also give a 90 word description of the dress while another member of the team modeled the dress on the "runway".

Unfortunately I was absent yesterday when the fashion show took place, therefore I didn't get to see every-bodies outfit. However, I saw a lots of pics of most of the outfits and they all look amazing! Every dress was made out of something completely different! I am really glad hat we had the opportunity to make outfits out of recyclable materials, it really showed us what can be achieved using "Junk".

See what other TY students got up to during Junk Kouture here.

Treasure Hunt!

For the past few maths classes we have bee learning about cryptography and how to use it.  Cryptography is an art of writing and solving codes. lets say you have a message that you want to put into code, you first encrypt the message and then decrypt the code if you wish to find out what the message reads.

Ms. O'B aloud us watch the National Treasure as part of our study on cryptography. everyone really enjoyed the film and it showed us how cryptorgraphy can be used in lots of different situations.

Final Mini Company Workshop

This week we attended our final Mini Company workshop at the Odeon cinema in Newbridge. As usual Orla  was presenting the workshop. This work shop was a lot more involve as Orla went around to nearly each mini company and asked how each company was doing and what the financial side of things were looking like. unfortunately Orla did get a chance to come to our group at the lunch break we got to have a quick chat with her about how we were getting on. She was very impressed by our idea which is a Sports Skills app. She also informed us that there were very few apps in the competition there fore we had a good chance!

Later, Orla spoke to us about the importance of developing a business relationship with people and how to work as a team in order to reach your goal. Orla then showed us a DVD on how we should act around people in a business internment.

Afterwards we got to look around WhiteWater  however my friends and I just went straight to get food at Ginzeng. I was delicious! ;)

F1 in Schools - Here we Come!!!

This week we got fantastic news that our F1 project qualified to the regional final! We were thrilled as we were one of the two teams selected out of the entire year! The judges gave us some very good convective criticism to work on for the Finals which will be held some time in March of this year. however we have a lot of work to do before then. Firstly we have to finalize the car designs and send it to our manufacture. Then we have to source sponsors and begin to fund-raise and advertise for our group. we have our work cut out for us but it should be good fun! :)

If you wish to find out more information on F1 in Schools check out their website here.
Also make sure you check out our blog where we will post regular updates on our progress throughout the competition, there will also be more pages coming to the Rapido y Furioso blog soon so keep following it!

Gaisce - The President's Award

This year all TY's were given the opportunity to participate in the Gaisce Bronze Award or the The President's Award. Each individual must choose a Community Involvement Activity, a Personal Skill Activity and a Physical Recreation Activity. Each student must spend one hour on each activity every week for 13 weeks. You must also choose one of your three activities to extend for a further 13 weeks. So, for my Community Involvement Activity I will be supervising the Homework Club after school for 13 weeks. I love working with computers therefore, for my Personal Skill Activity I will be taking an online computer typing coarse for 13 weeks. And finally, I will use one of my swimming sessions as for my Physical Skill Activity and my Additional Activity for 26 weeks.

As part of the Gaisce Bronze award each student must partake in the Gaisce Adventure Challenge, a mandatory part of the award. This challenge involves a 25k hike over a 48 hour period.  Ms. Mc G has organised for us to stay at the Kippure Adventure Centre in Co. Wicklow when our hike will take place in April. We are already looking forward to it!

If you would like to find out more on Gaisce check out their website here.

Simon Community Mementos

When Ms. O'S was giving us our talk on the work the Simon Community do, she spoke about Mementos which are like snapshots of life. This video gives you and example of some people's mementos who are part of the Simon Community in Cork.

Simon Community Talk

This year as part of our religion coarse we are writing and preforming our own dramas on issues that we have a particular interest in. My groups drama is about the effects that war has on all sorts of different people. This week Rósin wrote the first part of the script and we had our first sort of rehearsal today in religion. I am playing the role of the killer who was reluctant to actually kill another soldier on the opposition. I am really look forward to seeing how our entire play turns out. We have to act out an actual war so we're buying fake blood, toy guns and adding some cool sound effects! Should turn out pretty impressive ;)

The other group in my class are preforming their drama on homelessness. So as part of their 'research' they or organised a talk from our Art teacher Ms. O'S on the work she did with Simon Community. She spoke to us about the different projects she worked on and how they tied in with art. I found the talk really interesting and made me realize that I really want to get involved in Volunteering work when I'm older. Thanks to Ms. O'S for giving us the talk yesterday.

Rápido y Furioso

This year in technology everyone must enter the formula 1 racing competition called "F1 in Schools". Everyone is in either a group of 5 or 6 people. Within every group there are different roles allocated to each person. These include; Managing director, Design Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Resources Manager and Marketing Manager. There are five members in my team. Our team name is Rapido y Furioso and my role in the group is the team manager. Our name means Fast and Furious in Spanish! We choose to use a graffiti background to match some of the streets in Spain.

This is our portfolio cover
Each group has to research into the factors that can influence the design of the car. The design engineer then has to come up with a design that satisfies all  requirements. The team also has to write up their plan or strategy for advertising, marketing, fundraising, and sponsorship. All of this information is then compiled into one portfolio which we will send in on Friday. Only 2 teams out of our entire year with qualify for the next round, so fingers crossed!

The Language of film

In English we were asked to chose our favorite scene from our favorite movie and write about the camera angles at various parts throughout your chosen scene. We were also asked to write about the lighting and sound effects, costume and makeup. Another key aspect of film is no-verbal communication. We had to look at his in detail.

D.E.A.R. Moment

This year the school library is no longer being used as a classroom, therefore it has had a complete make over. Towards the beginning of this year my class carried out survey's in English with Ms. W on 3 students from every class in the whole school. We asked them who their favorite author was, what were their favorite reads of all time were and what new books they would like to see in the school library. Once we got all of our results back we analysed them and made a list of new books that need to be ordered in for the library.

Before the open day at school, under the instruction of the new full time librarian, the library committee worked on laying out all of the new books. Our English class also wrote up reviews on different books to decorate the walls. The library is also newly refurbished with cool single desks scattered around the room which looks really well.

Today our English teacher Ms. O'R brought us to the library during English class for a D.E.A.R moment. ( A Drop Everything And Read moment!) It was actually really relaxing just to sit down for like 40 minutes and read in silence. Afterwards loads of girls opened their first library account and took out a book they were interested in reading , including myself. I think D.E.A.R. moments are a really good idea and I hope we get to do more of them in the future.

Homework club

As I am in Transition Year, this year everyone in my year was given the opportunity to supervise at the homework club after school from Monday to Thursday. I along with another transition year student stay for an hour after school every second Monday to help any 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year with any problems or questions they may have in doing their homework. I think it is a really good idea as we can share our knowledge from our Junior Cert with the current Junior Cert students. Supervising the homework club makes me realize that the learning structure of TY is entirely different to that of the Junior Cert, in a good way of coarse! ;)

Catch the Cyberbully

In our last IT class Ms.L showed us how to catch the cyberbully by keeping the evidence. This video outlines how you can take screen shots of any nasty comments you may receive on social networking sites or anywhere on the internet.

Bond, James Bond!!

Today we traveled  to Odeon cinema in Naas for our second mini company workshop. However, when we arrived we got news that our presenter, Orla was ill and the workshop would not be going ahead. So instead the staff decided that we could watch the new James Bond film "Skyfall"!! The shouts and screams let out by everyone was unreal! We all couldn't believe it and we were so excited. It's fair to say everyone got really into the film as-well, like clapping when Bond killed the villain! :D

Afterwards we were greeted with another present surprise.... everyone got a goodie bag with popcorn, sweets, a drink and a Madagascar cup! ;) It amazing how excited TY's get with free stuff! ;) Today was defiantly one of the best days of TY so far!! :) Thanks to the business teachers for bring us today it was truly enjoyed by all.

Say Cheese! :D

Here is an example of light photography,
however ours weren't as good as this! ;)
This year Ms. O'S set up a new photography club after school every Thursday. There are 15 girls from TY and 5th Year in the club including me. So far we have learnt lots of new and interesting techniques. The first few weeks Ms. explained the basics of taking a good photograph. We each learnt how to use certain settings on our own individual cameras which could be used in order to take a good photograph.

Ms. also introduced us to light photography which was actually so much fun!It gave us the  the opportunity to create unusual images and show our artistic flare. Light photography is basically drawing an image using a torch or a light  while working in complete darkness. It can sometimes be difficult in creating the image and it takes a few practice runs, but it is defiantly worth it.

The end result!
Over the past three weeks we have been working on our Avatar! ;) We are using an online programme called pixlr (very like photoshop) and changing a normal picture into an Avatar type picture. We follow an online tutorial in order to create our Avatars.

Here's the link to the online tutorial if anyone would like to give it a shot:

Green schools

This year I decided to join the Green Schools committee. We meet up once a week on a Monday at lunch time to discuss different ideas that could be used and implemented in order to maintain our three green flags and also work towards securing a fourth green flag for Bio-diversity.

Within the green committee we are divided up into different groups . Each group as one role or task that they must carry out. For example, I am part of the Recycling/Bins group. Each week we look at the contents of different bins throughout the school and calculate the amount of waste in a particular bin. Ruth and I are in charge of checking the 5 recycling bins for cans around the school each week. This data we then be complied with the other bins such as paper and plastic in order to create a chart to show the results.

Towards the end of our weekly meetings we have a discussion on what actions we could put in order to achieve a fourth green flag for the school. So far there are talks of a garden in the school and setting up bird feeders in the courtyard, nothing is official at the moment but watch this space! ;)

Ghouls in School - The Scary side of class Síocháin ;)

Halloween Dress Up :)

Scary Zoobies
Today was the annual Halloween dress up in the school. Everyone brought in a €2 donation which goes to a chosen charity.  Each year was given a particular theme that they had to dress up as.

  • 1st Year were Scary Witches
  • 2nd years were Crazy Pirates
  • 3rd years were Villains and Super Heroes
  • TY. Spooky Zombies
  • 5th year's were Scary Clowns
  • 6th Years Harry Potter characters.

This year I dressed up as a Zombie Mechanic. I must say a great effort was made by all, however only 2 people from every class was chosen to represent their class in the fashion show in the hall at lunch. Lucky Shannon and Zoe did class Síocháin proud by winning both prizes in TY, so well done girls! ;) There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the school I would like to say thanks to all of the Prefects who organised the dress up day! It was a truly unforgettable day.

Work Experience video - Week 4

The Big Bad World

Well, we have been on our work experience every Wednesday for 5 weeks now and I am really enjoying my placement at St. James' research lab in the Institute of Molecular medicine. So far I have learnt how to extract and also genotype DNA. I have also worked in the Bio informatics section. You can read all about what I do from week to week on my work experience blog.

Here is the link to  my work experience blog:

This week we interviewed each other on our work experience take a look above!

Up and coming fashion designers!

It's now six weeks into our Junk Kouture project and we are making great progress. Our theme is Powerful Greek Goddesses and the Goddess we choose is Medusa. We plan to make a large snake covered in CD's that will be raped around the modal; we also plan to make great headpiece out of tapes from old videos to give the outfit that mysteries look. So far we have completed the paper mache for the bodes and have stuck on the center of the CD's onto the bottom of the bodes. I collected over a 100 CD's from my friends and family and then cut them all up into smaller pieces. At present we are drilling the holes in the CD's so that we are able to sow them onto the material which will be wrapped around the dress. We are also dismantling old electrical equipment; we will use some of the electrical components and wires to add some detail to the dress. Hopefully after the midterm we will start to make significant progress and everything will start to come together.

You can look at what all of the other TY Junk Kouture groups are up to by clicking on the link bellow to the  TY art blog.

Here are just some pictures of what some of the winning costumes looked like from last year ( We have a lot to live up to) :

Get on your bike!

Today a man from Kildare County Council came to talk to us about cycling. In his presentation he showed us the importance of cycling and how it can also improve the environment. He also showed us some stats of the number of people that cycle in Ireland by comparison to the number of people who cycle in Sweden. Lets just say there is a huge difference in the numbers! He then went on to talk about the advantages of cycling to school. Throughout his presentation he showed us a number of videos to do with cycling. This video was one of my favorite's, it was made by Mercedes-Benz. It proves that cycling can sometimes be faster than using a car however, it also shows us the advantages and disadvantages of using a car or bike.

The future scientists!

Young Scientist

At the beginning of October we all sent in our young scientist proposals for judging. I am doing my project with Ruth, our project is to carry out research on the shelf life of milk. We plan to investigate how long it takes milk to “go off” when it is exposed to different temperature and storage conditions. We will then compare our findings to the shelf life that is determined by the milk producers. We chose to investigate milk as it is a common beverage that is used in nearly every household. Everyone has  had  an experience of milk turning sour, often before the best before date. We want to find out what is the best way to avoid this happening. The tests that we intend to carry out are :
  1. To investigate whether plastic, cardboard or glass has an effect on the shelf life of the milk, i.e. the containers.
  2. To find out how long it takes for milk to turn acidic, i.e. produce a lactic acid when stored at different temperatures.
We will soon be finding out whether we got through to the BT science exhibition in January. Hopefully we got in, fingers-crossed! :)  However, we will be entering Sci-fest also later on in the year.

If anyone is considering entering for next year here's the link to the website:

Minor Hockey Match

Today I went with the schools  minor hockey team to St. Raphaela in Sandymount! When we arrived it looked as though their entire year came out to support them! But of coarse the Wolstan's girls went out fighting getting a goal within the first 15 minutes. From then on it only got better, with St. Wolstan's receiving another 2 goals in the second half!

It was a great game but a lot of the time I was organizing the subs going on and off which is actually a little more difficult than you may think! But luckily I got everyone on and everyone got a chance to dig in! :)

Afterwards the coach Vinny agreed to bring us to Mac Donald's to celebrate our 3 - 0 victory! I have to say it was well deserved girls  so WELL DONE! :D

What we've been up to in Choir and Orchestra

Choir

At the moment there are no up coming school masses which means that we can focus most of our time on the piece we are entering into the Wesley choir competition. The song we are learning is called "Caresse sur l'ocean." It is a bit difficult to learn as it is in French but we are eventually getting our heads around it and putting in the extra practice when we can after school! To date we have learned as far as the end of the first section. :) Here's just a little clip of what it should sound like in the end.

Orchestra

We have just begun learning our new piece which is called "Toy Symphony".  I  am playing the piano part. I believe that the piece will sound pretty impressive once it is finished as there are a lot of people on percussion which add and enhance the sound of the orchestra.  Here's what it should sound like once we are finished (we are only playing the second and final movement) :

TY is no Doss Year ;)

Irish

We have just finished giving our individual presentations on our life, our school and the sports we are interested in through Irish. We are now working on debates as Gaeilge! I won't lie it is a bit of a challenge but of coarse we TY's are up for it!

Spanish

For the past month we have been studying different movies in Spanish. WE all picked our favorite film and wrote a summary of it in Spanish! If you want to have a look at them they are all hanging up beautifully at the back of Ms. M Spanish room ;) We also just finished the movie we have been watching since the beginning of the year - El Bola. Here's a link to the plot summary.

History

Over the coarse of the last few weeks we have been looking at the different forms of governments in other countries at different periods in history. although it may seem a little boring it actually is really interesting. Some of the forms of governments in the past were absolutely outrageous and no citizens had a say in how their country was governed! We should be doing a write up soon ;)

Science

Since September we have been studying chemistry in science. we have been up to all sorts of weird and wacky science experiments including turning a copper coin gold ;) We made a volcano out of bread soda and vinegar. We also did a titration experiment! We are now currently working on a poster about the periodic table.

Religion

We have just finished presenting our power point presentations on the millennium development goals in class. My group had goal four on child mortality. I found the project really interesting and I was also surprised at how much they have achieved so far. We are now look up dramas that we could act out in class! this should be really fun :)

Music

We are still learning how to play the guitar at the moment! So far we have 5 chords under our belts! We are also doing a lot of singing in class and finding out which rage suits our voice best. We have just finished learning "Say a little prayer for you" by Aretha Franklin.

Maths

We have been working on algebra mostly for this month. We recently did a project on a famous mathematician. I did mine on Leonardo da Vinci! When I was researching him I found him particularly interesting as he linked maths into art by using perspective. Before I was unaware of the link between the two!

English

At present we are preparing our debates for Monday! I have never taken part in a debate so it is a new experience for me.

Tech

My fish key ring
Over the last two months we have completed a lot of practical work. So far I have made a keyring in the shape of a fish and a clock in the shape of a star! This year Mr. W aloud me to come up with some of my own designs as I did tech for my Junior Cert. I also get to help out with other girls in the class who have never done tech before! Tech is by far my favorite subject and we always have a good chat with Mr. W.

Now just imagine the Ty's dressed in big yellow boxes doing this dance! ;) Funny stuff right ;)

Fun walk/ Friendship Week

Fun Walk

Yesterday St. Wolstan's had their annual fun walk! This event is one of the major events that take place in Wolstan's during the year. As per usual each year was given a colour, then each base class had to think of a theme, song, and dance to do with friendship.
Our lovely lego costumes!

1st years - Pink,
2nd years- Purple
3rd years - Green
TY's - Yellow
5th years - Blue
6th years - Black and White

My class, Síocháin, dress up as Yellow Lego because Lego always sticks together just like friends! ;) The song that we danced to was Hey Ya, not a song really to do with friendship ;)  However it was very upbeat and lively and everyone had a good laugh which was the main thing! I really enjoyed watch the other classes in the school some classes came up with very innovative ideas!

This year my class had  to stay at different crossing points along the walk to help people cross the road, you know just in case no-one got knocked down or anything ;) Chanice, Orla, Alanna and I had a great system going with Ms. W, while of corse singing the safe cross code.

Friendship Week

Educating Essex

Religion

Over the past few Religion classes we have been learning about bullying and how important it is to treat everyone equally. We're watching the channel 4 show Educating Essex. It's about a school, in Essex, that deals with all kinds of problems. We watched the bullying episode. The show focuses on two very different students. Gabby who is the head girl  and Sam who doesn't take school to seriously. Both are victims of bullying in different ways. I thought that the program showed people that anyone can be a bully and anyone can be the victim of the bullying. I really enjoyed watching Educating Essex, I think it is a great show and surprisingly did educate us.

English

In English we look at some friendship quotes we even made up our own in groups. This is our wonderful quote:

"Friendship is a must,
A mutual bond built on trust,
When with friends you feel like royalty,
Being accompanied by their loyalty."

These are some of favorite friendship quotes;

Business Workshop

On Friday we attended the first of three workshops organized by our Mini Company Teachers at Odeon Cinema in Naas. We attended the workshop with 3 other schools from Kildare. The workshop was presented by a lady called Orla who gave us ways of coming up with ideas for our Mini companies. She showed us some of the winning companies from past years which was very interesting to see the ideas they came up with. She also taught us about working in a team and the roles that must be undertaken. After our teachers kindly brought us to Lidl in Clane! ;) We couldn't stop laughing as the 80 of us walked through the door. Using loose change from the bottom of our bags, we bought the cheapest sweets we could find! :) lol

When we got home we were just in time for Junk Kouture in Home Ec. Our outfits are really beginning to take shape! I can't wait to see everyone's finished product!

Today we all finalist our ideas for the Young Scientist with our Science teachers. We will be working hard over the next week in order to finish our proposals which are due next week!

This week is also our first week of work experience hopefully all goes well for everyone.

Workshop Wednesday Week 2

Today we had our second Wednesday of organized activities. Once again we had three workshops. The first was with our Guidance Concealer Ms. H. She made sure that everyone was completely organized with their work experience. She also gave us some advice on what we should do in certain situations if they are to arise. After the workshop I felt more confident about going on work experience as I kind of knew what to expect.

Our second workshop was with Austin.  Everyone had to pick up 8 different coloured flash cards. On each card there was a sentence to summarize the type of person you are, e.g. "Is always thinking of others". Therefore, you choose 8 cards that suit your personality the best. We then were divided into four groups depending on the colour of the cards that we choose. Each colour represented a type of personality. Then Austin talked about what each person with that type of personality is best at. He discussed with us how different people can mask there true personality also. Overall the workshop was absolutely excellent. I definitely learned a lot about the different types of people/personalities in the world.

Our third and final workshop was a Positive Party! We not only had a great time messing around with each other in the masks that Denise brought for us, we also learned about how to interact with people in the work place. She spoke to us about building re-pore with our employers, she also spoke to us about how we should great our employers and our co-workers.
